What do the 17 goals mean?
Each of us has the power to do something about issues such as climate change, poverty, hunger, displacement, and migration. We decide whether to buy products that have been manufactured under fair conditions. We decide how much energy we consume. We decide how we use natural resources. Our decisions have a direct impact on us, other people, and future generations. It is time to change our way of thinking. We all have a role to play, including politicians, businesses, and each and every one of us as individuals.
So what can we do to contribute to climate protection, fair standards in the world of work, and the fight against hunger and poverty? The 2030 Agenda with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals provides us with guidance. These goals were adopted by 193 heads of state and government at a United Nations summit in New York in September 2015. The 2030 Agenda is a contract for the future of the world. In it, countries commit to enabling all people to live in dignity by 2030. To achieve this goal, we in Germany must also change our lifestyle.
THE AGENDA
Agenda 2030 lists five core messages that precede the 17 goals as principles for action:
